Camela Cowan works as a Yoga Therapist specializing in chronic pain and addictions at a multidisciplinary medical clinic in Nelson, BC. She offers both private and small group sessions for clients dealing with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Osteoarthritis, back pain, whiplash, and a host of other symptoms, injuries and conditions. By guiding clients to delve deeper into themselves finding stillness and a mind-body connection, they essentially rewire the nervous system with new positive associations to movement and the body, thereby allowing pain symptoms to subside and transformation to take place.
Camela is certified as a Yoga Therapist with Yoga Therapy International and holds a RYT-500 in Therapeutic Yoga with Yoga Alliance. She has been a dedicated practitioner of yoga since 1997, teaching since 2006. Her initial 200 hour yoga teacher training was with Kavita Maharaj of Red Door Yoga in 2004 when she left behind a career in sustainable community development and forest certification.
Following two car accidents which left her with debilitating soft tissue injuries and chronic pain herself for 3.5 years, Camela met her yoga therapist and teacher, Maggie Reagh, who completely cured her pain after only two group sessions. This solidified her interest in yoga therapy and led her to deepen her own practice. Shortly thereafter she began formal studies of Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda--an intensive 3 year program based in the Krishnamacharya lineage following the teachings of both Desikachar and Iyengar--which led her to Chennai, India to study with master teachers D.V. & Radha Sridhar, Viji Vasu and Dr.Ganesh, as well as Vancouver based Ayurvedic Practitioner, Jaisri Lambert and Iyengar teacher, Lindsay Whalen. This classical form of yoga adapts yoga to the individual rather than the other way around.
Over the last five years, she has specialized in working with people recovering from stroke and various movement disorders, as well as seniors and now people living with chronic pain. She finds joy working with people who can truly notice a marked difference in their lives through the practice of yoga.
